The laptops we used were: Acer Aspire 1700

Spec as written here:

Intel Pentium 4 3 GHz , 1 DDR SDRAM , 120 GB IDE Portable , 17 in TFT active
matrix , 1 Lithium ion , Microsoft Windows XP Professional

http://www.notebookreview.com/price/default.asp?productID=7586&productFamily
ID=254&brandID=1&display=priceDetail

We have two of these, bought 18 months ago... mainly chosen for the 17 inch
screen, which at the time was rare.

It's no longer sold, now replaced by the Acer Aspire 1802WSMI

We ran Premiere, AE, Encore etc on the 1700 without a problem, and also
connected an external drive unit so we could swap caddies between this and
the main pc systems.

The downside is its weight... 15.7 lbs. It's not taken out of the studio
much anyhow, but when it is, we use a trolley!

Hey,

If you don't mind me asking, what were the specs of the laptop? I
need to be portable, so a laptop is what I'm using. I'd like to know
what a decent laptop editing machine looks like.

Thanks,

James
