google MPEG Mediator. It's free you can convert VOB to AVI. I'm sure there are
lots of other tools do the same too

No 'editing' programs read dvd or vcd files directly... Its due to the way
the information is saved in the mpg (dvd-vcd) format.. I couldn't really
explain it to you, myself, lol, but thats how it is. So if you want to edit
something that you got off of a dvd, you're always going to need to transcode
to avi format first, no matter what editing software you have.
