Hi Becky: One big difference between DV and analog is "device control", which is not highlited by those folks selling converters. The net result is that you probably will have to push play on the camcorder before the computer will begin to have anything to capture, (in DV, the computer can do it for you).
If your computer is equipped with firewire, consider borrowing a cheap miniDV recorder from a friend while your son's enthusiasm is still high for a project or two. These "snags" are annoying. But in the long run it is this journey that makes it such a great hobby, not necessarily the final video. Question: with the camera turned on record mode/standby, can you see the picture on your computer? This is probably what you should seek next.
