I know that Premiere Pro can import and edit MPEG-2 and MOV files
directly on the time line, but when I do this, rendering is required and
some image quality is lost.

Is it better to transcode these files to AVI before importing them? If
so, what programs do you use, and what kind of AVI do you create?

Thanks,
Tom Mansell
