The problem is not MPEG-2 compression. The problem is Adobe didn't bother to 
fix the audio out of sync after a drop out. All other media playback program or 
editing software (Vegas) handle the same mpeg stream no problem.

I think you will find the problem is to do with the compression to mpeg2

(The pictures are compressed in blocks of frames (GOP) the audio is not)

So every time you stop and start the video shoot this can
throw the sound out by a few frames.
I am sure that someone here can explain it better.
