No, I don't watch horror movies. I can't see what is going on because of the poor lighting and darkness throughout.
Just because it has been done for decades does mean it is done "on purpose". It could just mean the editor had no idea how to do it correctly, and some director thought it was cool. Spielberg comes to mind. There's nothing stupid about looks including crushed blacks if it's done on purpose. You've been watching movies with crushed blacks for decades unless you never watch any horror movies. They have to use the crushed blacks so that you don't see all the mistakes in the special effects. A good example for this is Evil Death. Still a great movie though. A lot of video clips have crushed blacks too. No I'm not talking R&B only.
