I have MPC as well but it does not play ISO files, at least mine doesn't.
I have no problems playing H.264 (AVCHD) files.
I always make and ISO file of a DVD first. I then play it with the VLC 
media player
to check that all the functions I put into the menu etc. will do what 
they are supposed to do.
I do this because the preview in Encore did not always work properly in 
the past.
I then burn my DVDs in Nero.
If I will make BR discs one day I would need a program to play BR ISO 
files which
my present VLC media player does not do.
