Since you mentioned spice... Check out Pixelan SpiceMaster transitions.
It's a plugin which uses a greyscale image the same size as your video to
control the wipe effect between two segments of video.
Pixelan has a large library of effects images but you can also make your own.
Their images will also work with other plugings for other video editing
software that uses a greyscale image for defining wipe effects.
If you're good at Photoshop (or work with someone who is) buy the plugin with
the smallest, lowest cost selection of wipe images and make your own.
One custom type I can think of, which would not be in any pre-made selection,
is to do a double wipe with some text. For example use a horizontal gradient
for the name of a band, overlaid on a radial gradient. The name would wipe
across horizontally while the background would do a "clock hand" style wipe.
Generate some "plasma cloud" fractal images in greyscale for random cloud
transitions - which could have words, shapes and other things overlain.
I used some of Pixelan's old 640x480 samples with a wipe plugin for Media 100
on a Radius 81-110 Macintosh clone. The company told me they'd sold many copies
of their 640x480 and 640x576 sets to users of old Media 100 systems.
