First of all, many thanks for the many responses to my question about my 
firewire problem. That's the great thing about this group.

It was a great set of responses, all of which made sense. The suggestion 
about replacing the previous firewire cable fit the "facts of the case" 
perfectly, though, and finally yesterday I was able to buy a new cable 
to try it out. And yes indeed, it turned out that replacing the firewire 
cable (something that I would *never* have thought of) did the job.

(The old cable was about 10 years old, but I still never would have 
thought of it as the culprit.)
