I think the best solution for this is to do:

1. Make a mksysb tape on original server

2. On new server, boot off AIX CD and select (I forget exact menu nomenclature) not
regular mksysb restore but Recover from etc, etc. (Check AIX Install manual or if you
have experience wander through menu.)

3. When you get to select device for mksysb restore THEN insert your mksysb tape and
restore. (You can select specific disks to use for rootvg if you want).

As you are going to different system type and probably at least some minor hardware
this will use mksysb tape BUT when it finds it needs some code that is not on mksysb
tape it will pull it from AIX CD.

After system is back up then you can setup non rootvg filesystems and restore that
data from ADSM.

Does anyone know of a Redbook or manual that would cover recovering
an AIX server to a different server type? We will be migrating SP widenodes
to rackmounted M80s. All the systems have external SSA excluding the
rootvgs.
My concern is when we attempt to restore the rootvgs. Will we have
to manually go though and restore some system files while skipping others?
Our rootvgs hold /, /usr/, /etc/, /tmp/, and /home/.

We haven't started anything so even suggestions on preventive
measures would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
