Katherine, Let me try to convince you: If you have a "large" database (whatever vendor) and "small" transaction logs for it and some kind disaster strikes (you have *DISASTER* recovery manager, don't you) your library. You can get back from vault the database data but without the logs it is let's say one month back. And without this "small" data called logs you are outdated. Or even worse - all your volumes are in the vault but the "nearly empty" TSM database backup tape was checked in back into the library (and died as all other on-site tapes). So where to go from now? All the data is on hand but which one is where ... ?!?
If you feel not satisfied with the tape usage you can perform more aggresive copy pool reclamation. And if you are not enabled copy pool collocation the off-site tape usage will not be so bad. All I had to do was put the tape in that port and the 3583 moved it into a slot! I should have thought of that! I do have a follow-up question, or should I say another question. When I use the command move drmedia * wherestate=mountable tostate=vault to move my DBbackup and COPY storage pool tapes offsite, my filling copy tapes are moved as well. Is there an easy way to move one or more back into the library so that I can continue filling it/them? These tapes have such large capacity I hate to see too many sitting practically empty in my "vault". Thanks again for all your help, Katherine Faella University of Rhode Island >Help!
