sorry - its not the LANG - Variable as I thought, but you may get the files being backed up if you set instead the LC_CTYPE Variable for example to en_US.
This works for Umlaut-Files on a Suse 7.1 / TSMClient 4.2.0.0+TSMClient 4.2.1.0 The LC_CTYPE environmental - Variable on the Suise-Linux is normaly set to POSIX. Also you may check env-Variable LC_ALL ... this could overwrite all the LC-Variables which maybe the reason if a setting of LC_CTYPE does not work .... so you also may check LC_ALL ( should stay unset ).
