It is possible, but take it from me because I am experiencing it currently
first hand on a 3583, when push come to shove and it will.. IBM only has two
"IBM approved" LTO label manufactures (you will have to contact IBM, or
contact me directly and I will give you the Critsit manager's name that this
info came from for the manufactures names). Your home printed labels or
labels purchased elsewhere will be the first place they point their finger
at.

FYI,
Mark B.

Hello,
Maybe you can have a look at :
http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/tape/lto/oem/support/labelspec.pdf
It's possible to print your own labels then stick them on cartridges

Subject: Own labeling of LTO cartridges

cartridges, can he just create his own labels so that the LTO 3583 will read
them? If so, do they need to be in some kind of format? If this is not
possible, how would TSM work effectively in an environment where the carts
are not physically labeled?
