If you use LAN FREE the storage agent will push it over the fiber, not
over the IP network even if the data resides locally. It doesn't matter
where the data is.

Then how is that considered LAN-free?  If the data is not on the SAN
then how is it gonna be backed up "LAN-free"? It's just not possible.

This is incorrect.  LAN FREE either the data from the SAN or not from
the SAN it will backup using LAN FREE or through the fiber.

If the data to be backed up is not on the SAN, it is my understanding
that the SAN agent will send it over the IP network (traditional
backup).

The tape drives have to be available via SAN to the Storage Agent
machine.  The data to be backed up up does not.
