I can tell you what we do. I make a script that is a place holder like process_x_ok. In my main script at each point that I may want to stop I check to see if there is a script call process_x_stop (see below). If yes, then rename the script to process_x_ok and stop. If no then continue. This has worked great for us. Thus to stop the script I issue the command "rename script process_x_ok process_x_stop".
