Del, Last weekend the server was migrated and during the migration circular logging was on. After the migration the circular logging was turned off. This evening we are planning a reboot of the exchange server (maybe this will fix the problem).

If so, you can only perform full and copy backups. If you want to run incremental backups, you will need to turn circular logging off.
