You "might" be able to run the linux tsm client directly on the esx server, to get guest os backups. However even if that did work, it would be whole image backups (not file level), and you'd need to bring down the virtual machine before running it's backup. I think the more typical solution is to just run the tsm backup client within the os of each virtual machine.
