Are you backing up System State? They changed how this works (I think in 6.2.?), which puts more processing on the client side and allows server-side expiration to run more quickly. I can confirm that the server-side expiration does indeed run much more quickly for System State backups. We've not been able to quantitatively measure the impact on the client side.
