Yes and No It is used to access the Specialist web interface. The IP info is set from the front console.
We don't do this, but I believe you also use the ethernet interface to have the 3584 access a Master Console for dial home. See the topic "Remote Support through a Master Console" in the 3584 "Introduction and Planning Guide". I think it says you need 2 ethernet interfaces to do this. Curiously, there are ethernet connections in each frame with drives. It's on a small box above the top most drive. Via the console you can set IP info on each frames ethernet port. You can then access the specialist from multiple IP addresses. We had a issue where the specialist became unresponsive. IBM said the library would need power cycled to free it up - which we couldn't do right then. They then suggested just moving the IP address to one of the other ethernet ports and move the lan cable to that port. This worked until we got a power cycle on the lib. I found this interesting - a hung specialist in the first frame and working specialist when accessed via other frames. You are correct that the ethernet connection is NOT used for library communications from the TSM server. That is handled via control paths defined on some number of drives. These show up as a separate device at the server. On AIX they show up as smcX devices. So library communications occurs across the fibrechannel san. rick -----Original Message----- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU] On Behalf Of Zoltan Forray Sent: Thursday, May 15, 2014 1:07 PM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: 3584 L23 IP interface Am I correct that the IP connection in the L23 frame is used purely for the Tape Library Specialist web interface, not like the 3494 where its IP connection was also used for management interface with the TSM servers? My network folks want to change/move the address. -- *Zoltan Forray* TSM Software & Hardware Administrator BigBro / Hobbit / Xymon Administrator Virginia Commonwealth University UCC/Office of Technology Services zfor...@vcu.edu - 804-828-4807 Don't be a phishing victim - VCU and other reputable organizations will never use email to request that you reply with your password, social security number or confidential personal information.
