As I recently found out, BuildConfig.DEBUG refers the manifest "debuggable" attribute and not the build type. To avoid any confusion, I suggest that BuildConfig.DEBUG should be renamed to BuildConfig.DEBUGGABLE. I would be happy to submit a patch, just wanted to confirm that this is something others would be interested in.
