The method names are case-sensitive.
resValue 'integer', 'sftp_port', '1234'
buildConfigField 'int', 'SFTP_PORT', '1234'
Both of those work for me with 0.12.+

Thanks Jake,
Your suggestions can put me on the right track. But what if I want
to read from a "*.properties" file?
Is that possible?
I have a set of properties that I want to configure based on build
type.

You can also do the resource approach solely from the
|build.gradle|, actually:
|android {
buildTypes {
debug {
resValue "string" "ftp_port" "\"7655\""
}
release {
resValue "string" "ftp_port" "\"21\""
}
}
}
