Quick update on this...

Turns out that I managed to successfully install android studio using the
zip file download option. I also noticed that this version also asked me
for a java sdk, and when I specified the correct version, things went
smoothly.

So at this point I am not sure whether there is a bug on the windows
installer version of android studio (I think related to the findJava)? Not
sure how to prove this or if it is even worth proving at this point.
