"Serialization" isn't really the right term.
Attributes use a special format to save their data that isn't related to the .NET serialization infrastructure (s).
We used "pickling" as the term, but I'm not sure where that came from.
Don't know if it's related, but "pickling" is (or used to be) the name for Python serialization.
