i first saw this in core j2ee patterns book. it was
used widely in the non-oo world previous to this but
was not 'realized' as a pattern at that point.

for a nice list of all the patterns that you'd want to
know, check out http://www.patternshare.com. the site
(its run by folks associated with microsoft so there
might be a bias, who knows :) ) attributes the pattern
to microsoft patterns and practices.
