I'm taking a look at MS Logging App block and log4Net (and anything else
that's free or reasonably priced). One of the main things that I would like
to do wrt enterprise logging is to centralize the output of logged items
from a multitude of applications within the enterprise. The other main
requirement would be that the central repository could be accessed, entries
could filtered by time and application application etc. and viewed/a viewer
(not just a file).

For these purposes, I believe that log4net's RemotingAppender along with a
RemotedServer that logs to a file (possibly the RollingFileAppender might
be a good choice) might be a good choice to prototype a solution. However,
the RemotedServer example supplied in the examples of the download is just
a very simple console app so I'm wondering if anyone has implemented a
remotedserver/service that is suitable for a centralized logger application
wrt performance and file access locks? I see a there are some file write
settings avaiable for this. There's also a UDPAppender that might do if
order and reliability of log messages is a minor logging issue or if the
viewer could easily filter and order file entries.

As far as MS Logging App Block, most of the out of the box log targets
don't appear to be suitable for enterprise logging except for the message
queue and possibly WMI targets. Does anyone have any opinions? I see the
list of log targets below for MS Logging block is much smaller than
log4net's out of the box appender implementations.

The event log - not easily centralized
E-mail messages - not suitable for logging IMO. Notifications only.
A database - might not available for logging; database down is a problem
unless specifically addressed in database topography.
A message queue - IMO a good choice for reliablity and performance
A file - not easily centralized; performance issues?
WMI - Not sure but it's supposed to be for instrumentation purposes. So
likely suitable.

Opinions please.
