Yes, we want a ping.  This is for a diagnostics test.  First ping, then try
openning an oracle connect, then try to retrieve data, then try openning an
FTP connect, then try FTP actions.....so on and so on and displaying the
results on screen.

Do you really want ping?  I ask because many people mistakenly think that if
you can ping you can open a TCP port and if you can't ping you can't.

Both are false.  Ex, many network admins turn off ping response (to prevent
ping-of-death attacks).  And, just because you can ping doesn't mean that
the port you want/need is open.

I'd suggest actually trying to open a connection to the port that you need.
