You could just use an OverlayLayout to place the controls on top of the
tabbed pane so that they fall in that place.

Subject: Drawing in the space besides the tab controls

Hi,

In a JTabbedPane, there is often extra room if you don't have a full row of
tabs. What is involved with adding controls to that area, or at least
drawing a clickable image in that area?

Best,

Ted
