If you have GUI problems with the java applet and gcj/classpath, please,
do post bug reports on gcc bugzilla (under classpath or gcj), so that we
can try to fix them.

As far as the java applet as a live help system, I think it is a great
idea.

A gtk-gnome java application (that can connect to a jabber network or to
irc) could also be a good idea, because this may find it's way as a
package on distribution.

There are already lots of channels on irc that can use as help desk for
users, but I agree that having a well defined central point can serve
very well. The only problem I see is if the channel gets crowded and
power users starts redirecting noobs to manuals...
