Yes, your understanding is correct. You will not be able to retrieve the headline for your past Gmail ad using ad.gmail_ad* from ad_group_ad report from Google Ads API V12 or v13 version. However, you may still be able to pull it via V11 before it will sunset from the API. You may pull all your gmail ad related data on your end to have a local copy for your reference.
