Anyone considering using pcntl, should also bear in mind that it's fine for a small script, but it's easy to end up exhausting resources. It's also very difficult to debug.
A much more scalable solution to the problem is implementing a Job Queue. This can allow you to synchronize tasks between servers as well as on a single machine. An example of a Job Queue compatible with PHP is Gearman<http://gearman.org/>. They've got a nice quick start guide<http://gearman.org/gearman_php_extension>that can help you get started with it.
