I've always really liked Peter Plagens' pithy writing. Over many years he's brought engaging insight and sardonic good humor to a field that's been pampering the uber-rich with mutual obsequious and narcissistic fantasy and dumbed down art for decades. So this new essay is welcomed. But he's not alone in calling for the renewal of idealism that is the core of the artist's strange vocation. It is the suddenly oh so new official credo of the artworld. Timely wisdom or convenient new marketing?
