Regarding that "should" which I used - which Kate and Mr. Asthetik have
questioned:

It was only applied to the viewing, rather than the making of things, and no
moral obligation was intended.

One 'should' carry an umbrella on a rainy day - and one 'should' avoid all
distractions when trying to experience something that was made for imaginative
contemplation. (I'm trying to avoid the word 'artwork ' since Kate finds it so
horrible)

One distraction might be the lovely legs of a young woman who is looking at
the same painting -- another might be some theory of art -- and another be
your great respect for the name of the artist (is it Titian?) printed on the
adjoining label.

(This is not to say that all of these things, and much more as well, will not
be affecting that moment in your life)

And, I wouldn't call this kind of viewing a passive activity.

It's very much like that state of mind which is cultivated in the martial arts
- where an 'emptiness of mind' allows for the most effective, immediate kind
of response to the unexpected.
