Saul seems to have abandoned the "reflection of  the economic, social, and
cultural circumstances of its audience" -- since when challenged regarding
what those might be for the plethora of items today's audience now gives value
--  his only response is "his sentiment".

And yes,  I think "sentiment" is best word we can use.

Isn't William's sensitivity to  "the screechy rrzzzzz of paradox" a sentiment
?  As is my response to whatever seems to demand another look, listen, or
read?

I realize that "sentimentality" is disparaged as the province of the great,
sweating masses who love Kinkade's  smoking chimneys -- but one sentiment is
not necessarily equal to another.

Some are more refined --  the result of a sensitivity that is more more
experienced and demanding. And this why, as William puts it, "we should not be
resorting to "general observation" always more or less faulty, to illustrate
our arguments." (as Michael is so fond of doing)

Heidegger also disparages sensitivity - but that's  because his own own is so
ponderously dull (as proven by his ridiculous discussion of Van Gogh painting
of the not-really-peasant's shoes)
