I applaud Micheal's new-found enthusiasm for the active voice, and would propose that this is the most important choice in aesthetics - i.e. it's the first fork in the road.
Those, like Frances, who are concerned with "what would usually be deemed" are heading down the road to sociology or market research. While the other road, taken by Sullivan, leads to an active participation in creativity -- as one who either designs, commissions, or "preserves" things (to borrow a notion from Heidigger) "Utility", as Sullivan understands it, is subjective, and as the master-student premise student of "Kindergarten chats" would infer, his subjective is more important than the reader's because he has mastered the profession, while you, poor reader, are merely a grasshopper (as the late Kwai Chang Caine would have put it) Although, as Sullivan was becoming more utopian (as William suggested) he would have been undermining his credibility, and his commitment to the function of public responsibility, which is a recurring theme found in his writing. Absent an expression of public responsibility, what remains is personal whimsy, and that seems to characterize much of the architecture which has "exploded in every direction and is accelerating at a quickening pace " (and thanks, Luis, for the fascinating links) ____________________________________________________________ Find solutions for your business.
