Miller's hatred of art schools, professors, and higher education betrays his
deep insecurities probably much else of interest to the psychiatric
profession. It never fails to amaze me how much he claims to know about art
schools and art curricula while admitting he's never been to art school.
Why is that the uneducated are the most strongly opinionated on all subjects?
As for my own students and this list, I suppose they might be too smart to
join in our antics; in fact, as far as I know, there are fewer than a dozen
participants here anyway. Because I have certainly embarrassed myself time
and again here, as I probably do right now, I hope my students don't see the
list. However, I notice that quite a few of them are my "friends" on Facebook,
and indeed some of them are friends, even though it was always my policy to
be their teacher and not their friend in the university. Mostly, what pals
and overly friendly MFA students want from their teachers is a good lead and
recommendation for a teaching job, artworld connections, and gallery
representation, etc.
For art discussions they enjoy their own peer group and
that's always been the case. Let's keep in mind, too, that most of my
students are now in their 40s or even 50s, well along in their own careers,
and aren't in need of advice from a genuinely old artist who'd probably just
remind them to figure things out themselves and is known to have little
empathy for dumb folks puttering along the edges of the field. Miller must
know that.

And reading William
makes me glad I never entered an American university
art program, where
students are browbeaten until they retreat into sarcasm and
the passive voice.
Have you noticed that none of William's former students have ever shown up
here to maintain contact and possibly learn something from the master?
(though, if any had an interest, a Google search would find him here on the
third page)
