 I read the de Duve essay,and Conger's remarks on it, and some other stuff,
and I think this is a possibility ,if a remote one. All sources agreed on
the number of decisions that had been revised during the course of the
painting. That the painting is a great painting is incontestable,but that the
resolution to which it has been brought was   satisfactory to Manet   is
not,leaving aside the idea that "it's not the vision I had" from Gulley
Jimson.
