Well, I bought the HP unit. From: Ken Hohhof Sent: Friday, September 27, 2019 12:26 PM To: 'AnimalFarm Microwave Users Group' Subject: Re: [AFMUG] switch recommendation
If you want it for POE, I find the specs can be confusing and need to be watched. POE, POE+, 24V, 48V, 802.3af, 802.3at, auto detect, force on, force off, etc. Also power per port and per chassis. POE+ to all 48 ports on a 48 port switch is a LOT of power. Many POE switches only have a subset of the ports POE capable (like half) or more common the power budget per chassis only allows a certain percentage of the ports to have POE enabled. Also there’s VLAN features, level of management capabilities, and just L2 vs L3. VLANs often come up, for example if you want one POE feed to a VoIP phone and will then daisy chain off the phone to a PC. Phone traffic might be tagged and PC untagged, or vice versa, if you have a PBX on its own public IP and doing DHCP and auto provisioning to the phones. Also possible I’m the only one who finds this confusing. Even better use the unify version and get a cloud key etc so you have the nice interface, and even better get the unify routers to do deep packet inspection in their nice interface. You can still get to the ‘ugly’ full on interface with a click from the ‘nice’ interface which I like.
