Hard to believe, hockey goalies didn’t wear masks until 1959 and there was considerable resistance. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goaltender_mask Hockey helmets were also controversial. I remember Stan Mikita was one of the first players to wear one full time. Seat belts and bicycle helmets were also controversial, motorcycle helmets still seem to be. All those things though are for your own protection. In this case, it’s to protect innocent bystanders from asymptomatic super spreaders, our equivalent to Typhoid Mary.
