That sucker is almost a 1/4 mile long, and who knows how much above the water, plus almost a quarter milllion tons. The side loads in a big wind would be a big deal in the open ocean. With only a couple hundred meters to negotiate, I can't imagine. When you get that thing going, you need to schedule your stop/reverse about two days in advance.

The other thing I was reading about was "large ship hydrodynamics", and the "bank effect". The Bernouli effect tends to suck the stern into the bank when a big ship is in narrow confines.

What I read was sandstorm reducing vis to zero with high winds.  I presume their radar is good enough to see the canal, but if it was a quartering gale wind that would be hard for any pilot.  If he or she stopped or reversed engines to come to a dead halt I would have thought it would not have buried itself in the side.    But stopping something that large...  Storm could have hit so suddenly that they couldn’t halt fast enough.

Since every ship transits the canal with a certified pilot on board, I want to know the story from the pilot. As soon as they assume responsibility on the bridge it’s their problem.

Thank you,

You see, the root cause is that the canal is only 200 meters wide. If they had dredged it to 450 meters, that sucker could have done a little spin.

The other solution would be to only allow ships that are < 200 meters long.
