Possible buffer overrun on Mikrotik routers
We are in the process of upgrading our backhauls. As part of this upgrade, I introduced a switch to the network. Instead of provider A being directly connected to BGP router A and provider B being directly connected to BGP Router B. I now have provider A & B connected to a switch and BGP router A & B connected to the same switch.
It appears this switch was feeding data to the routers faster than they could handle. It wasn't a consistent thing. Seemed to happen for a very short time and in bursts. Normal streaming, web surfing and even VoIP seemed to work fine. The calls we were getting were from people using ZOOM and other real time video chat applications.
I ended up enabling Flow Control on the interfaces. That has fixed the issue with no reported side effects. I can confirm the flow control is doing something, because I can see the throttles counter increasing.
The plan is to upgrade the two Mikrotik BGP routers to the current version and to work on optimizing the firewall rules. Hopefully that will help. Unless I see some bad side effects to the flow control being turned on, I'm going to leave it on.

Been getting a higher than usual level of calls about the "Your Internet Connection Is Unstable" message. These guys are on a fiber connection. Our upstream bandwidth is no where near capacity. Most of these guys are on our 50/50 mbps plans. Other real-time stuff seems to be working, such as VoIP. I'm just scratching my head on this one. -- Thanks, Mark mailto:m...@mailmt.com Myakka Technologies, Inc. www.Myakka.com -- AF mailing list AF@af.afmug.com http://af.afmug.com/mailman/listinfo/af_af.afmug.com |
