I understand but why then did the mRNA vax have different efficacies during the
trials?

Both the Moderna and the Pfizer vaccines target the spike protein specifically.
When you get "natural immunity", or maybe some of the other vaccines, you wil
probably be getting different antibodies, some of which have been defeated (or
seriously compromised) by the newer variants. I am of the opinion that one
spike protein antibody is almost identical to another spike protein antibody,
or close to it.

Here is the latest from the Sunday NYT:

Moderna’s vaccine appears to be the world’s best defense against Covid. Poor
countries are struggling to get it.

Moderna is selling nearly all of its Covid vaccine — the only product it
sells — to wealthy nations, earning billions in profit. About one million doses
have gone to countries that the World Bank classifies as low-income, compared
with 8.4 million Pfizer doses and about 25 million single-shot Johnson &
Johnson doses.

Most middle-income countries that have struck deals with Moderna have not
received any doses. Thailand and Colombia are paying a premium. The Biden
administration has pressured the company to make its vaccine, which was
developed with the support of the U.S. government, more widely available.

The development of Covid vaccines means more effective flu vaccines may
emerge, thanks to the same technology. In the meantime, public experts say it’s
extra important to get a flu shot this year to prevent a “twindemic.”

But you didn't get the whole process of the moderna, that's what seems
questionable, no second dose, and a different set of antibodies that the body
starts to produce from scratch. That's what I question. No supercharge..

I have to believe you would have better immunity. You would create a
double set of slightly different antibodies that would both go to work at the
same time on a virus.

I wonder what would happen if one took both the Moderna and the Phizer
    vaccines.

I read an article, not sure where, but it may have been the NYT or maybe
Science News talking about the need (or maybe not) of a booster. The Pfizer and
Moderna vaccines are very similar in concept and maybe even design, but the
dosages and intervals are significantly different.

The original Pfizer vaccine was two 20 ml doses three weeks apart.
The original Moderna vaccine was two 100 ml doses 4 weeks apart.

Some evidence has now shown that the larger doses with the bigger
interval seems to have more staying power. The same article speculated that the
Moderna vaccine may not need a booster for almost a year, or possibly ever.

The UK gambled with longer intervals, and that actually seems to have
paid off.

We are at the 6-month mark now, but we got the Moderna.

her diabetes, age and dental surgery gig...we hike most weekends
and walk almost every day...We did two tough hikes past two weeks
and my knee is complaining...i actually started wearing my knee
          brace today...
But other than that, we have been healthy... rarely eat out and
haven't gone to hear friends play music...Windy City is off until
next year... meanwhile three groups have asked me to join
them....my wife said No... besides that i really am enjoying our
          hikes ...
Stay safe out there...wear those level three masks...

Wife and I got ours this morning. Had to go to 4 places that
were both giving shots and had Pfizer. Finally Wal-Mart had it.
I feel invincible (at least I tell myself that) but I still
wear a mask when I go out and still avoid crowds. Not much
              going out yet.
Looking over the qualification form, almost anyone could check
a box and get a booster.
You don’t need to be old. It is easier to honestly qualify if
you are over 50 or over 65.
And you need to have 6 months elapse since your second
              vaccination.
But they don’t make you prove you qualify, they just want the
              box checked and the signature.
