Apparently Julian day numbers are a thing that's used in Astronomy, and that sort of thing... It's a continuous count of days starting at January 1st 4713 BC (by the Julian calendar), so today is 2461287.
I can see why using that would be useful for various things where you wanted to simplify calculations.
