Correct. It helps if you leave a tab on the tape by folding the free end back and sticking it to itself. It makes it a lot easier to find the end, and you don't risk cutting the cable jacket with a knife.

You don't want the tape in the conduit as the cables need to be free to shift going around the bends, and if you ever want to add or remove a cable the tape makes it impossible.
