I came face to face with a raccoon 130' up a grain leg one time.   I think each 
of us was as surprised as the other.   I retreated and let her be.   Scouting 
that potential site was no where near as important as whatever she was doing.  
Squirrels are just as interesting but they'll bail off the side half the time.
