Make sure to add http:// at the beginning and / at the end! Which the kids probably refer to (incorrectly) as a backslash.

Actually, Firefox perpetuates the idea that domain.tld is equivalent to www.domain.tld by adding the www for you if it doesn't work without it.

There is actually no technical reason why a website hostname has to begin with www, it could be www2 or fubar. In the case of fubar.domain.tld, hosting companies would refer to that as a subdomain, which I dislike.
