Commscope (or the Tessco house brand clones) has a 1/2” thick mat that offers a

I was looking at some 16 and 24 inch square rubber paving blocks at Menards
that are 3/4” thick and made of 100% recycled rubber, is there any reason these
wouldn’t work?

we always use mats. Not using mats is a great way to tear a rubber roof.
