We were running one color code network-wide until a few years ago when
more and more APs were being added and things got real messy. We do a
lot of 4x90 clusters. So I split the network into two color codes.
Back-to-back APs are on the same frequency (mostly) and the same color
code. The SM's primary is the sector that it sees the best, then other
other color code becomes the secondary so that the SM can fail over to
an adjacent sector.
I imagine in a 6x60 environment, you'd probably want three color codes.
Or in Sean's case, three APs on the side of a mountain facing the same
direction.
A completely unique set of color codes per tower when you have 100+
sites is way, way overkill. Unless you're talking small geographic area
with a lot of APs. We do have some SMs that can see more than one tower,
but that's mostly 900 FSK which is dwindling.
I was actually thinking about this the other day and we've all talked
about it in the past.. would it be a bad idea to ask Cambium for a two
or more level color code system? Maybe like a 0-255 provider, tower or
area ID on top of the color code? Maybe zero would be disabled for
backwards compatibility?
I hated the old Trango 5800/5x30 Base ID/AP ID thing on top of putting
all of the SU MACs with assigned ID into the AP database. Well, now my
AP is dead and I don't have an up to date backup of that SU database.
That's when we ripped the first Trango out and put in Canopy since we
had to visit every customer anyway. Freakin nightmare.

I forgot to mention that you leave the original colorcode in the sm as
well. Once all the sm's are recoded, you apply the new colorcode plan
to the ap's and reboot them all at once.

Hey sterling,
Yeah the SMs can have multiple color codes but the APs can only have
1. I plan on putting the 3 best "new" color codes in the SMs and
then the fourth CC I'll put the current tower color code. The
trick is gathering all the data from the SMs.
It's hurting my brain thinking about the best way to accomplish this

I think you could add secondary and tertiary color codes to the

I seem to recall doing that often years ago, but not sure if
there is an easier way other than manually.

I know JAB had written a very nice platform to do something like
this with Canopy, again, years ago.

color code per AP

Hi Gang,

due to historical reasons that are no longer valid we currently
have 1 color code assigned to all APs per tower. I'd like to
move to 1 color code per AP. However, this would require first
gathering all the data from the SMs as to which AP is their best,
which is second best and which is third best (we often have
multiple APs aimed in almost the same direction). We have
hundreds of APs and thousands of SMs so having a monkey log into
each SM and log this data would probably take a couple lifetimes
haha.

Before I go hire someone to write some scripts and create a
database to get this project going, I was wondering if any of you
have already done this and if you have any software tools you'd
be willing to share/sell.

Also if anyone else is thinking of doing this would you want to
go in on the development together? (if no one else has
accomplished this)

thanks,
