I use the butane soldering pen, but I just tack the drain wire down to the side of the plug. I'll have to try going under the metal; sounds like it would make better contact.

The doohicky is always fragile and breaks off, am I the only one who has been bending up the rear metal a little bit, using a small needle nose pliers, trapping the drain wire under it and soldering it down with a butane soldering pen?

We use Primus plugs. http://www.balticnetworks.com/primus-shielded-cat5-connectors-100-pack.html

The wire channels are larger than the UBNT plugs. Plus the pins don't fall out or slant when crimped.

I hate Primus cable, but their RJ45s are pretty good. Wouldn't surprise me if they don't even make them.

RF Armor preferred. Ubnt is OK. ARC is good, too.

Never seen this myself but maybe it's the salt?

Can't say that I've seen that happen, but I don't know that I'd blame the connector.

As far as I can tell the UBNT, RF Armor and Arc connectors are all pretty much exactly the same - we've been using RF Armor, for no particular reason other than that they're the cheapest of the three.

What is everyone's preferences for shielded connectors at the moment? We discovered at least one corroded/rusted connector last week at a site which had taken a direct or nearly direct lightning strike which melted pig tails as well as destroyed an omni among other things. It was a site we bought so we don't know the manufacturer of the connector or if it's something we installed and it's the first one I've seen on our network. Has anyone else seen this happen? Lately we've been using RF Armor have used Ubiquiti shielded connectors in the past.
