My thought is if you need to replace either unit, you've essentially "married" 
them together; complicating something that should be simple.

I would rather devise a pair of pipe mounts that are so close together that the 
units will still look like one unit.

Probably do it with a couple of M-tow-Ps that you can adjust the spacing on.
