I’ve never used the Tripp Lite APC series, but I believe their main purpose is
emergency vehicles, RVs, boats, etc. where they switch automatically between
battery and shore power. Using similar units in the past, I have found one
thing to look for is how low the shore (commercial) power has to be for the
transfer switch to switch to batteries. They may just use a relay, assuming
commercial power is either there or it isn’t. But we get a lot of partial
voltage situations like 60 or 80 volts, and a lot of our electronics won’t run
on that. It’s very frustrating to drive out to a site that is down, and find a
fully charged battery string that isn’t being used because the ATS thinks 80
volts is plenty.

How about a APC750 or APC1250 tripplite inverter/charger?

Also I wanted to have a way to monitor how long of runtime the batteries have
remaining...like the APC smart UPS units.

The tool you're looking for in relation to the monitoring is a packetflux
sitemonitor base unit.

Others can point you toward the chargers.

What is everyone using as a battery backup at sites that cannot use a
standard off the shelve UPS?
The site in mention is probably using 500 watts max. The battery side
of things is a no brainer - calculate run time, determine your bank,
buy batteries.
However, what are you using for:

1. Inverter / charger
2. Network monitoring capability when AC goes out with SNMP.

The hardest challenge I've found is sourcing something for network
monitoring that isn't an all in one charger/inverter like the ICT
models at 1k.

Always wondered if you could rig a APC network card to work in a battery bank...

If anyone could share the layout of their system I'd appreciate it!
